Metering Installation

Where Your Meter Gets Installed

Usually placed outside your premises, at a height reachable without climbing equipment. If it’s on your property, you’re responsible for its safe custody; if IESCO installs it on a pole/structure, that responsibility is theirs. Multi-occupant buildings get individually labeled meters per unit.

If Your Meter Is Stolen or Damaged

Report it in writing to your local sub-division office immediately – IESCO will install a replacement and may recover the cost through a demand notice or your regular bill, and may pursue legal/FIR action for theft.

If Your Meter Is Found Defective

  • IESCO must replace it within 2 billing cycles.
  • In the interim, you’re billed on an average basis (based on last year’s same-month usage, or your last 11 months’ average – whichever is higher, capped at 2 months).
  • If the fault was a simple display issue and your actual usage data can still be retrieved, IESCO must correct your bill retroactively to reflect real usage once retrieved – average-basis charges get adjusted back.

Think Your Meter Is Inaccurate?

You can formally request a check:

  • Pay a meter challenge fee (Rs. 500 single-phase / Rs. 1000 three-phase).
  • IESCO tests it in your presence within 7 working days using a calibrated check meter or testing equipment.
  • If it’s running fast (overcharging you): meter is replaced at IESCO’s cost, and you get credit for the excess for up to 2 previous billing cycles.
  • If it’s running slow (undercharging): meter is replaced at IESCO’s cost, but you’re charged the shortfall for up to 2 previous billing cycles.

You can also independently request the government’s Electric Inspector/POI to test it – in that case, IESCO cannot remove your meter until that independent test is complete.

Want Your Meter Moved?

Apply in person or online with your reason. IESCO surveys the new spot within 7 days and, if approved, shifts it for Rs. 500 (single-phase) or Rs. 1000 (three-phase) plus any extra material cost.

Bottom line: If you genuinely suspect your meter is wrong, the Rs. 500-1000 challenge fee is refundable in outcome (you only really "lose" if the meter turns out accurate) – worth doing if your bill has jumped without a clear reason.
